Museum Exhibits and Displays

We are in the process of building our permanent displays telling the story of Chatteris.

The story so far is:

In The Main Display Room you can enter the pulpit and read about the Churches of Chatteris.

There is a magnificent oak fireplace from a now demolished grand old building and our unusual Town Stocks!

The Barn  -  in this area you can see all types of tools and implements used by the workers on the land around Chatteris.

Transport  -  in this area you can see various types of memorabilia from the old Chatteris Railway Station alongside a penny-farthing bicycle and a boneshaker bicycle. There are also police and fire service items, together with the dock and cell door from the old magistrate’s court. There is usually a local historical video to watch as well.

The Shop  -  in this area there are many items from various shops of the past including a delivery boy’s bike and old enamel advertisements.

Like most museums, we are constantly changing and updating our displays and the artefacts, documents and photographs within them.  Also, like most museums, we have more things in storage than we have on display, so it is essential that we keep rotating these items.

The Upstairs Gallery is used for temporary displays and exhibitions. We often try to link these displays to topical subjects and anniversaries.

Arts and Crafts exhibitions by local artists and crafts people are a feature of Festival Week and December.
